Using different types of gear at the same time

Here is question a beginner dj had about mixing diffeent types of dj gear.

Quote:
I found your web-site to be very informative and people like me appreciate your help. I am interested in starting to DJ. I’m not looking to do anything big, I pretty much want to do it just for fun for myself, and maybe do some parties for some friends, but nothing big. Anyways, I need to know what equipment I will need to start up keeping in mind I don’t need anything to elaborate. I want to make music and sample music myself to make some cool original beats. I have many CD’s that I want to play so I think the CD players would be a good idea. I also want to be able to scratch as well so I think i might need a turntable. Is it possible to use one cd player and one turntable and a mixer? I don’t know much about this so if you can pass along any advice I would appreciate it.
Thank YouJeff

Hi Jeff,You can absolutely use a CD player with a turntable. I would suggest you take a look at Stantons new line of DJ equipment. It’s been redesigned and re-engineered. I checked them out at the International DJ Expo last week in Atlantic City, NJ.

Since your starting out small I would suggest the SMX 201 mixer. It’s your basic mixer. For your turntable take a look at the T.80. It’s built for scratching but you can mix on it too. It comes with 500B carts already mounted. For your cd player the C.313 should work. You can’t scratch with it though. You’ll need the C.314 to do that. The C.313 has sampling and looping features plus loads more stuff.

Other than that all you need is an amp or receiver and a couple of speakers (home speakers will work fine for small house parties). In order to make beats you need a beat machine like an Akai MPC1000. I have the 3000.

American DJ Introduces LED Version Of Electra Moonflower Effect

American DJ Introduces LED Version Of Electra Moonflower EffectAmerican DJ has introduced an LED version of another of its classic moonflower effects. Inspired by the popular Electra 250, the new Electra LED is a scanning mirror moonflower using red, green and blue LEDs that produce razor-sharp beams.

The Electra LED contains 46 total LEDs, 16 Red, 15 Green, and 15 Blue, which provide amazing brightness and rich, saturated colors that won’t fade. In a visual comparison, the light output of the Electra LED is similar to that of a 250-watt halogen bulb, while drawing much less power and offering all the other benefits of LED technology.

Traditional halogen moonflowers can’t deliver an eye-popping lightshow like the Electra LED. In addition to the brilliance of its LEDs, a glass optical system with new lens technology enhances the sharpness and clarity of its beams, while a wide beam spread allows the fixture to cover a large area. The colorful LED patterns can be projected onto a dance floor or a wall. Sound-active with built-in programs, the Electra LED is virtually ready to go as soon as it’s plugged in.

“LED technology is changing the DJ and club lighting industry,” said Scott Davies, General Manager of the American DJ Group of Companies. “Now users can have classic American DJ moonflowers and club effects with all the benefits that LED technology provides.”

Among the many benefits of LEDs are low heat output, which keeps the Electra LED cool enough to run all night, eliminating duty cycles altogether. Dancers or performers also stay cooler without the lights radiating heat. Additionally, thanks to its minimal heat production, the Electra LED doesn’t need to cool before packing, making it ideal for mobile entertainers. LED technology also provides longer lamp life, rated at 100,000 hours, removing the hassle—and expense—of bulb replacement. And LEDs consume less power, which not only saves money on electric bills, but also allows more units to be connected together in a single circuit.

Lightweight and portable, the Electra LED is perfect for DJs and mobile entertainers. Weighing in at only 5 lbs., the Electra LED can go practically anywhere. The Electra LED measures 17″L x 8″W x 9″H and comes with a hanging bracket. It has a suggested retail price of $159.95.

Maintain your DJ equipment with these DJ supplies.

D4

Having the right supplies for maintenance of your gear will extend its life to give them years of enjoyment.

Let me ask a few questions. Do you know what DJ supplies you need to have with you at all? What do you use to clean your records? How do you clean your needles?

Where do you go to get replacement DJ supplies? How do you know if you are getting the best deal? What DJ supplies should you always have on hand?

I will answer these questions and more because it’s the little things like DJ supplies that separate DJ’s who truly know their DJ equipment and those who think they know their DJ equipment.

Getting straight to the point, here is a list of DJ supplies at minimal that DJ’s have when maintaining their equipment.

These DJ supplies will help in keeping DJ equipment free of dust and dirt and extend its life.

DJ supplies for cleaning record varies. There are basically two correct ways of cleaning records.

  1. Use an anti static brush to get the best results as record cleaning fluid might not do the best job. Older records may require a liquid especially if the record has been exposed to dirt and grit.
  2. Use a record cleaning kit like D4 or Gruv Glide. These will yield good results if an anti static brush is not handy.

Cleaning Records.

  1. Before cleaning your records blow some compressed air on them to get the loose dirt and dust of them. Hold the can upright when dispensing the air. Holding it at any other angle may cause the liquid to come out and freeze your record and cause the groove of the record to warp.
  2. Use the anti static brush or cleaning kit to remove the unseen dirt and dust from the record. Remember to follow the manufacturers’ directions when using their products.

Using your shirt to clean records is not recommended but I do it all the time. I don’t rub my shirt in the record I simply give a quick swipe in a circular motion following the grooves of the record. Going against the groove might cause a scratch in the record and render it useless.

At minimum always have a record brush, preferably an anti static brush, a can of compressed air and a CD cleaner kit if CD decks are being used to DJ.

Get these DJ supplies to maintain DJ gear and to keep them in optimal condition. This also keeps their resale value high and makes the DJ equipment more desirable.
